Abstract

The rapid expansion of digital technology has transformed how children and adolescents learn, socialize, and relax. However, increasing screen exposure-across social media, gaming, streaming, and online learning-has raised significant concerns about its effects on mental health. This presentation examines current research on the psychological and neurodevelopmental impacts of excessive screen time, emphasizing associations with anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, attention difficulties, and emotional dysregulation. It also explores the moderating roles of content type, screen context (educational vs. recreational), and developmental stage. Evidence suggests that while moderate, purposeful use can support connection and learning, unregulated or passive engagement may disrupt sleep patterns, increase social comparison, and heighten vulnerability to stress and low self-esteem. The talk will further highlight protective strategies, including parental co-engagement, digital literacy education, and structured routines to promote balance. Finally, implications for clinicians, educators, and policymakers will be discussed, focusing on practical interventions and the need for nuanced, developmentally informed guidelines rather than one-size-fits-all restrictions. Understanding the complex relationship between digital media and youth mental health is essential to fostering resilience in an increasingly connected world
