The Alberta Psychiatric Association (APA) is linked to the Alberta Medical Association (AMA) through the Section of General Psychiatry. Our Section's voting rights at AMA Representative Forums depend on the number of psychiatrists who are members of AMA and also members of our Section. We currently have two Representative Forum (voting) positions and if numbers increase, our section will increase to three Representative Forum representatives. We also actively liaise with the AMA's Section of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (SCAP), with the SCAP President sitting on the APA Executive as a non-voting member, and having a separate Child & Adolescent representative at AMA Representative Forums.
An important section function is to represent psychiatrists during fees and benefits negotiations that establish the Alberta Health Care Schedule of Medical Benefits.
Our section's Representative Forum reps are eligible to seek committee positions within AMA, with various opportunities including the sought-after AMA Board of Directors positions.
The SGP holds its Executive and Annual General Meetings in conjunction with, but separate from the Alberta Psychiatric Association. It operates under separate bylaws which it shares with other AMA Sections.
