Abstract
Recently there has been a surge in interest in the use of psychedelics in the treatment of mental illness, and in their use by the community at large. What are the pros and cons of using psychedelics? What are the pros and cons of requiring a prescription for their legal use? How closely should psychedelics' use be controlled? That is, why would we move forwards with clinical control and caution, requiring prescriptions and regulated professionals to be involved? Alternatively, what would be the arguments for simply removing restrictions and allowing the population to explore psychedelics?
We are honoured to have two distinguished speakers joining us, from different experiences and predominant concerns in this debate. Brendan Leier has a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Alberta and works as Adjunct Professor with the John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre. Dr Rob Tanguay is a psychiatrist graduating from the University of Calgary, who has gone on to support the emerging use of psychedelics in treating mental health while expressing caution about widespread use at this point. Both speakers have had multiple roles relevant to this debate, deepening their awareness of the complexities of this issue. We are bringing them together to help us explore key considerations through the format of a debate. This debate will be moderated by your current APA President, Dr Kathy Fitch, and will include opportunities for attendees to ask questions of our debaters.
