What is ArtRecruits?

ArtRecruits provides Calgary's mental health population with alternative experiences in developing employment skills through the medium of art.

What is the connection between art and employment?

The essential skills needed for employment success include time management, communication, interpersonal skills, problem solving, conflict resolution, planning and the ability to work independently. All of these skills can be developed and practiced through the discipline of art. ArtRecruits is an experiential learning opportunity where people can develop these skills, ones that Calgary employers are specifically seeking.

Who can benefit from ArtRecruits?

This program is for adults with mental health challenges, either self-disclosed or diagnosed. ArtRecruits is designed for individuals who are:

  • wanting to secure employment;
  • able to commit to 15 hours per week (Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday) for 12 consecutive weeks;
  • more inclined to learn outside of the classroom or traditional employment workshop model;
  • interested in broadening work and life skills;
  • currently underemployed or unemployed;
  • committed to obtaining meaningful employment or further education;
  • not eligible for Employment Insurance (EI) or EI reach back; - Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or persons whose refugee status has been conferred;
  • legally entitled to work in Canada.
What does this ground-breaking program offer?

ArtRecruits facilitates a learning experience that is different from any classroom based model. ArtRecruits creates opportunities for individuals to achieve their employment goals through creative experience as opposed to a lecture.

In this 12-week program (15 hours per week) participants will:
  • create art, using different media and processes;
  • engage a community partner in the creation of a joint art project and public exhibition; and
  • achieve job placement, career development and educational goals.

ArtRecruits supports participants in directly translating their experience and learning into either the workforce or further education and training.
