Dr. Richard Hibbard, BSc (Pharmacy), MD

Dr. Hibbard retired from psychiatric practice in Edmonton in 2021 and is attending this meeting as a guest, with recognition for his presidency of the APA during 2000-2001. His work has focused on finding a theory that identifies psychopathological mechanisms shared across multiple disorders, aiming to create transdiagnostic formulations and unified treatment protocols for emotional disorders. He has investigated common neural mechanisms involved in various treatment approaches, including pharmacological, psychodynamic, cognitive, and behavioural interventions. While in practice, Dr. Hibbard advocated for the use of DBT to improve outcomes for suicidal and self-harming patients and contributed to implementing CBT training for psychiatric residents. After retirement, he maintains an interest in neuroscience research, particularly computational psychiatry.
