He received his medical degree in 1975 and completed specialty training In Psychiatry at the University of Alberta. He attained the Canadian FRCPC fellowship in 1980, and the American DABPN fellowship in 1981.He worked in the psychiatric intensive care unit at Alberta Hospital Edmonton. He worked in 3 severely under-serviced units at the Royal Alexandra Hospital from 1980-84, Fort McMurray from 1980 to 1987, and Lethbridge Regional Hospital from 1987 to 2004. His special Interest was in bipolar spectrum mood disorders, from before they were identified as such. In 2001, he developed a special interest in hormonal equivalents of mood and cognitive disorders, and since 2005 has practised in the community with this focus. His continuing passion is to extend better care to women.

He worked for 28 years in the Alberta Psychiatric Association, 9 years in the Canadian Psychiatric Association, both versions of the Relative Value Guide initiatives, and through much of his career with the Alberta Medical Association, serving on the Fees Committee and Representative Forum. His active interest has been promoting better recognition and payment models for psychiatric services.

He has been an active member of the Rotary Club of Lethbridge East since 1987.
