Following my medical studies at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich, Germany (1984 – 1990), I trained and worked in different academic institutions (Technical University of Munich, Germany; St. Elizabeths Medical Center of Boston, MA, USA; National Institute of Mental Health in Washington, DC, USA; University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, Hamburg, Germany).
In April 2007 I accepted a position as associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry of the Cumming School of Medicine of the University of Calgary. I provide inpatient- and outpatient-services at Foothills Medical Centre. I also run a clinic at Pathways to Housing, a housing first program that focuses on severely mentally ill clients with a long history of homelessness. The focus of my clinical work and my research activities has been on schizophrenia and, more recently, on Early Psychosis and prodromal stages of psychosis.
I served as Psychiatry Evaluations Coordinator (07/09 – 06/12) and Psychiatry Clerkship Director (07/12 – 09/18) as well as Resident Research Coordinator (07/08 – 09/15) for the Cumming School of Medicine. On July 1, 2016 I was appointed as CPD-Director for the Department of Psychiatry of the Cumming School of Medicine. Since 2018 I have been serving as the Medical Director of the Mental Health Clinical Trials Unit (formerly known as Psychopharmacology Research Unit -PRU) of the University of Calgary. I am a member of the Mathison Centre for Mental Health Research and Education of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute of the University of Calgary. I am a former President of the Alberta Psychiatric Association and currently serve as a Board Member for the Schizophrenia Society of Alberta.
