Dr. Alma Fourie, PhD

Alma Fourie holds a PhD Diaconiology, from the University of South Africa, as well as a Master of Commerce Degree (cum laude), majoring in Industrial Psychology, from Stellenbosch University, South Africa. She also received her Higher Diploma in Education from Stellenbosch University, South Africa.

In South Africa she worked as a School Psychologist for the Western Cape Education Department. She immigrated to Canada during 2007 and has since worked in Calgary as a therapist at Rocky Mountain Psychological Services, as owner of her own private practice, and as Clinical Manager at Homewood Health, as the Director of Housing at The Mustard seed, and as the Executive Director at Brenda Strafford Centre for the Prevention of Domestic Violence. She is also a sessional instructor at Ambrose University College in Calgary and has taught courses such as Child Development, Play Therapy, Working with Exceptional Children, Working with Individuals Who are Experiencing Homelessness, as well as Personnel Psychology. Currently she works as the Principal Director Programs and Operations at Sonshine Community Services in Calgary. She realizes the importance of providing trauma informed care services and programming to the culturally diverse staff and clients served by agencies in the domestic violence and family homelessness sector.

She has 25 years of experience and possesses particular expertise and experience in clinical supervision, leadership, mental health and addictions, program development, counseling, as well as facilitation and training. Her research interest includes adverse childhood experiences, and trauma informed practices. She has presented at conferences in South Africa, Calgary, Banff, San Diego and Ottawa. She has a passion for working with individuals who are vulnerable and is enthusiastic about sharing her knowledge and experience.
