From 1984 until 2007 I studied, trained and worked at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University (Munich, Germany), the Technical University of Munich (Munich, Germany), St. Elizabeth's Medical Center of Boston (Boston, USA), the National Institute of Mental Health (Bethesda, USA) and the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (Hamburg, Germany). Since April 2007 I have been working as an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry of the Cumming School of Medicine of the University of Calgary. I currently provide outpatient-services at Foothills Medical Centre through the Early Psychosis Intervention Program. I also run two clinics at Pathways to Housing, a housing first program that focuses on severely mentally ill clients with a long history of homelessness.

I currently serve as Medical Director of the Mental Health Clinical Trials Unit (MHCTU) and CPD-Director for the Department of Psychiatry of the Cumming School of Medicine. On January 1, 2020, I was appointed site-chief for the Department of Psychiatry at Foothills Medical Centre. Since January 1, 2022, I have been serving as Associate Dean CME&PD for the Cumming School of Medicine of the University of Calgary. I am a former President of the Alberta Psychiatric Association and Past President of the Board of the Schizophrenia Society of Alberta.
