Nutritional psychiatry is a growing field with an increasing evidence base. Medical education has not historically included significant focus on how nutritional interventions may play a role in mental health, often leaving this area unclear as pertaining to what recommendations are founded in evidence. Low powered studies and general lack of consistent findings has added to the lack of clarity around recommendations. We will review the evidence base currently available in this field as well as consider the mechanisms by which nutrition is thought to impact one's mental health. Finally we will also consider the future of nutritional psychiatry within the larger context of policy and guidelines in the field.
1. Review the current evidence in nutritional psychiatry;
2. Understand the mechanisms by which nutrition is thought to effect mental health; and
3. Consider the future of nutrition in psychiatry treatments.
