Dr. Vincent I.O. Agyapong, MD, PhD

Dr. Agyapong is a Clinical Professor with the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Alberta and an Adjunct Professor of Global Mental Health at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana. He is the founding Program Director for the International Masters Program in Global Mental Health Policy, Services and Development, a collaborative program with faculty from 5 institutions in Canada, the USA, Ireland and Ghana. He is Alberta Health Services’ Edmonton Zone Clinical Section Chief for Community Mental Health and he serves as one of two Specialist Members on the Health Technology Expert Review Panel for the Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health. He has also served as a Mental Health Expert on Disaster Medicine with the Canadian Institute for Health Research Communications and Media Relations Department. Dr. Agyapong completed a Research MD in Clinical Psychiatry and a PhD in Global Mental Health, both at the University of Dublin Trinity College in Ireland. In addition, he holds multiple certifications and fellowships in psychiatry from Canada, the UK, Ireland and the USA, as well certifications in health services management, forensic medicine and statistics. He has over 70 publications in international peer review journals and has made over 50 presentations at national and international conferences in 16 countries across 4 continents. His research focuses primarily on disaster mental health and global mental health innovations that expand access to quality care. He has won numerous awards related to his work, including; the Health Innovation Award in 2011 from the Royal Power Magazine, Alberta Health Services’ Spirit of Excellence Award in 2016 and the Edmonton Zone Medical Staff Association Physician Innovator of the Year Award in 2018. In addition, he has had the Text4Mood program, his brain child recognized by the Mental Health Innovations Network which is headquartered at the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse of the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. In January 2019, we was selected by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as one of six physicians across Canada to be featured in their 2018 Year in Review online publication.
